Happy St. Paddy’s Day…..We rolled out the movie projector and hung the screen in the trees. A great night as all the opera go’ers walked by and some stopped to be informed. Nothing screams educate the public like a 31 ft billboard, parked downtown in an upscale neighborhood with a movie playing in the background…not to mention the popcorn! What would you like to see? An amazing day in Sarasota educating masses of people. We have been parked (since 11 am or 13 hours) at 5 Points Park, with tables + chairs outside the “V”. This is awesome! Not one cop has come to harass us. One, did go by and give us the peace sign 🙂
The people we met today (coming to and from the Opera House mainly) have found us: 1) interesting 2) amazing 3) crazy 4) cute (yes that was a response) 5) brave and committed 6) admirable. We have found them all interesting and every last one of them will remember us! Whether they think us good or bad, like us or not, they know that WE STAND! (more…)
There was a real buzz in the air as the “V” arrived in Sarasota. For such a small core of people, so much was being done. We started by attending a reading at the Commissioner’s Office to overturn Citizen’s United, which went very well. A number of locals from the Occupy movement each read a short brief why “We as citizen’s are against Corporate Personhood”. It was their goal to have these readings documented and on file, so that the issue be raised to the State Level and added to the ballot at election time, if approved. (more…)
Sarasota has a real bunch of go getters! Lots of direct action happens here with varying turnouts. The core group would like to see better attendance for protests and marches, but overall they are a very dedicated group. The craziness around the police festers just like other places in Florida. One oddly strange and weird arrest (Chris) for chalking the sidewalk! We couldn’t believe it, sad but true. How in the world is chalking a sidewalk, which is done almost everywhere as a form of art and expression (mostly encouraged where I live) be an arrestable offense? Really Florida….this is the best you can do? (more…)
