Walmart strikers

This Black Friday we need to send the Waltons a message. We can’t sit back while their workers go hungry any longer. And Walmart and the Waltons must stop taking illegal actions against Walmart workers who want to work hard and be able to provide for our families

To take action, join us at the north end Pueblo Walmart with a sign saying that you support the workers fighting for fair pay and respect, we’ll be taking picture of ourselves, to let the manager we support the workers’ cause. Walmart tracks all of these actions and they have a huge impact. There’s an example picture right below! (more…)

Tonight we joined others at Sisters City Plaza (Pueblo), a stand in solidarity with our Mexican friends and families who are rising up against their Gov’t, being held liable for the disappearance of 43 male activist students.

Protesters in the Mexican state of Guerrero have set fire to the local legislature as outrage spreads over the disappearance of 43 students. The students from Ayotzinapa teacher’s college have been missing for nearly seven weeks after they were ambushed by police. Unrest has intensified since Mexican Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam announced Friday that suspects in the case have admitted to killing the students and incinerating their bodies at a trash dump. More than 70 people have been arrested in the case, including the mayor of Iguala, who is accused of ordering the police attack ……see more on the story here:

Last week updates from Pueblo & Trinidad, CO

The "V" in Trinidad Colorado

We’d like to welcome Marcel Kuemmet who arrived last week to lend a hand fixing the Li’l stone house, where we’re building a future music and art space for kids on the Eastside of Pueblo.  We’re excited with all that’s been happening here to get us to the finish line with our music space.  We can’t wait until we can use it for Friday night open mic.

The “V” was in Trinidad, CO this past week for a the Southeast Regional Philanthropy Days.  Over 3 days we pitched our case for a grant so we could fund our vision of 3 functional houses all offering unique things.  The media house will be the most expensive to fix and we’ll definitely need grant help to make that happen.  If anyone knows of grant writers send them our way :-) (more…)

CSU Orientation + Riverwalk Drumming Circle

Met a whole lot of great people today at CSU student orientation. It was packed around noon and both Joe & I gave out hundreds of cards. We hope to have student volunteers joining us soon. We met musicians, artists, creative and passionate people who loved what we’re bringing to the east side. Great things are on its way and with the music and art space complete we’ll have another area for bringing people together to better the community.

We followed the day by joining a drumming circle on the river walk under the main st. bridge where many talented drummers gathered and what a sound they made!  The coordination of rhythm & beats was astounding.  Drummers came from CO Springs and Denver to participate.  We surely have a lot of talent locally.  Many have offered to play at Pueblo House and that’s wonderful.  We’re working hard to get the houses completed so we can start more programs for the kids. The League of Women Voters met today for their annual retreat in Beulah a beautiful mountain village in Colorado just 1/2 west of Pueblo.  It was a great day discussing the next years program, events, coordinators and volunteers.  The LWV is not just for women any more and they actually encourage men to join.  We had 3 men out of the 15 total attendees.  The meal was very tasty and the scenery wonderful as was the conversation. Protests around the world respond to assault on Palestine

We stand in support of all those in Palestine who are being attacked by Israel.   Protests were organized in cities around the world today in response to the ongoing assault on Palestine and the Palestinian people.   We’re outraged that a Palestinian 16-year-old (Muhammad Abu Khdeir0)  was brutally murdered by Israeli settlers.  The bombing of Gaza and the killing of over 300 Palestinians by occupation forces, the mass arrests of over 1000, and the raids, attacks, tear-gassing, invasions and closure that Palestinians are being subjected to are crimes against humanity. Tipton’s Office on immigration reform

June 4th, 2014 | Posted by Occupy The Roads in Congressman Tipton | Pueblo - (Comments Off on Tipton’s Office on immigration reform)
Fernanda leaving Tipton's office

Today we accompanied Fernanda Zaragoza & Gaby Morales to U.S Congressman Scott Tipton’s office to ask the question “Where does Congressman Tipton stand on immigration reform?”   We sat with his two staff members who couldn’t answer the question.  But with clipboard and pens they took notes and certainly looked like they cared.  However,  I wondered how you could work for someone and not know their position on such an important issue?  We asked a few more questions and then talked about how families are being torn apart yet congress is doing nothing about the issue.  We also brought up the issue that veterans are being deported after serving their country.  Does this sound right?  Again no real response came regarding this issue.  The staff told us they would get back to Fernanda on Monday with Congressman Tipton’s position on the subject.  We will let you know the response.

In the meantime Elizabeth Warren is hosting a question & answer conference call on June 10th 7:30 E/T.  I’ve posed a question… (more…)

March Against Monsanto in Pueblo

There was a decent turnout for the march against Monsanto today.  Many had their signs and stood for hours waving at the passing traffic many of whom honked to let us know they got it too.  We estimate about 80 -100  might have been  present.

Most of the fun was handing out pamphlets to let the consumers, who were totally oblivious to Monsanto and it’s “evil doing but, were shocked when they learned that stuff was being put in their food without their knowledge.   Most were eager to get the information.  Some of course, with their “no thank you” as they see you coming with paper like you’re going to attack them.   Sadly, we live in this kind of world where some feel bombarded with so much stuff going on ….. it’s information overload for some. PCC Job Fair and Youth meetings

Last night Pueblo House had a few young 20 year olds who were interested in finding out more about Monsanto and what they’re doing to our food supply.  With a growing concern about foods being genetically modified they wanted information and answers.   Colorado is fighting back with the “right to know” request for labeling.   Petitions will be gathered and signatures submitted to get this on the ballot for November.

May 24th will be a global day of protest with large marches taking place across the globe.   We will be there supporting the march against Monsanto set to take place on Northern Blvd on the south side.  We’re expecting quite a crowd to show up and help educate the public on what a GMO is and how it affects those that ingest it.

We ended the night watching the movie “End of the Road” which talks about the money printing business of the Federal Reserve. (more…)
