League of Women Voters of Pueblo

Today I joined my good friend Dr. Anne Courtright who is a long time member of the League of Women Voters of Pueblo. She and others put on a luncheon meeting at the Renaissance Restaurant where guest speaker Marguerite Salazar gave a talk on the “Affordable Health Care Act”. Ms Salazar served as President/CEO of Valley Wide Health Services, Inc. (VWHS) since 1989. VWHS is one of the largest rural Community Health Centers in the country, providing primary care to over 40,000 residents of the San Luis, Lower Arkansas and Upper Arkansas Valleys in Southern Colorado. Previously, Ms. Salazar directed Access Social Work Service, a firm that contracted with local public health departments, hospitals and nursing homes to provide social work services. She holds a Master’s degree in counseling psychology from Adams State College in Colorado.

The room was filled to capacity with curious folks who wanted to know more about health care. The talk Ms Salazar gave answered a lot of questions and gave pertinent information that both Anne and I felt should be provided to everyone. Understanding the laws and healthcare are important for everyone. There is far too much misinformation out there and it’s time we helped America be informed. Our plan is to have a short version of this presentation put on PBS or other news stations to help educate people about their rights.

The lunch itself was wonderful and it was great to network with more people of Pueblo to learn about the city and have them learn about us (OTR and Pueblo House).
